Most of those men had little if any formal theological training, lived in the same impoverished conditions as the people of their churches, and most had little income beyond what the poor people of the church were able to provide. Often that support would come to the pastor in the forms of chickens, eggs, vegetables and other items, rather than in cash.

The more time the American pastor spent with the Romanian village pastors the more he came to appreciate how difficult it was for those men just to feed their families. One night, after the service was over, the American pastor felt led by the Lord to give a gift of money to his Romanian brother pastor. As he handed the money to him, tears poured down the Romanian man's face. When the American asked what was wrong the Romanian pastor explained that he had been quietly praying all day that the Lord would divinely supply some money or food for his family because at that time they were broke and out of food. He didn't know how he was going to feed his family that day. This event marked the beginning of CERT International's "Romanian Pastor Support Program."
