As is true of many remote locations in developing nations around the world, contaminated drinking water poses a serious health risk for the
Quechuen's of Peru. Intestinal worms, parasites, and many other waterborne illnesses are a major problem. It is estimated that over 80% of
all diseases in the developing world are caused by contaminated drinking water and that more than five million children a year die from
waterborne illnesses.
CERT International has been working among the Quechuen Indians of Peru for more than 12 years. Twice each year we send in medical and
dental teams to conduct free clinics. However in 2008 we also began a five year community development program that includes installing large
volume water purification units at the community water sources. These lightweight units, designed and manufactured by New Life International,
are versatile, durable, and at maximum capacity can produce up to 60,000 gallons of safe drinking water per day!
In August 2008 CERT teams installed the water purification units in two Quechuen Indian villages in the Ancahuasi region north of Cusco.
Three additional units will be installed in early 2009. However many more are needed. There are 13 villages located in CERT's focus area in
the Ancahuasi region. Our vision is to provide all of them with safe drinking water. Eventually we hope to install water purification units
at all our of our ministry sites, including the Amazon Jungle and in Mexico.
As we do in every area where our teams work, in the Andes Mountains CERT teams work in support of American missionaries and national churches.
Our goal is always to provide humanitarian relief in the Name of Jesus but to do it in such a way that it strengthens the ongoing work of the
missionaries and churches. By providing people with clean water for their bodies we are able to tell them about the Living Water for their souls.
The cost of a single water purification unit is $1500. If you would like to help CERT International provide safe drinking water in the Name
